Quantum computing is a ground-breaking technology that harnesses qubits, the quantum counterparts of classical bits (0s and 1s). Unlike classical bits, which can only be either 0 or 1, qubits can exist in a superposition of both states simultaneously (just the way an electron spin value). This unique property empowers quantum computers to solve complex problems that are intractable for conventional computers, such as the renowned Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP).

A Double-Edged Sword for Cybersecurity

While quantum computing holds immense promise, it also introduces significant challenges to cybersecurity. Current cryptographic algorithms, such as RSA and ECC, could be rendered obsolete by quantum computers, leaving our data vulnerable to algorithms like Shor’s algorithm.

To address this threat, post-quantum cryptography and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) are emerging as promising solutions.

Post-quantum cryptography focuses on developing encryption methods resistant to quantum attacks, while QKD provides a secure mechanism for exchanging secret keys over long distances. Researchers are actively refining these technologies to ensure their real-world applicability.
