A cloud-based solution for IoT and data analytics for a leading provider of innovative products in the Industrial and Energy domain

CASE STUDY

Business Overview

The customer is a US-based company that provides innovative products and solutions in the Industrial and Energy domain. They also have power generation and distribution solutions based on IoT.

Challenge

The main challenge faced by the customer was the need for a cloud-based analytical solution that would utilize the data read from the power generation station and power distribution IoT.

The data analytics solution should help the customer analyze periodic data and understand the periodic trends—generation, usage, and prediction of future power demand.

Solution

The solution was hosted in AWS and could read the data much faster than previously. This method ultimately helped in analytics and prediction.

The solution had three major components:

  • Data acquisition: This component extracted periodic data and instantaneous alerts from the IoT mesh network and persisted in the local storage.
  • Data migration: This component migrated the real-time data to the AWS database service fault tolerantly.
  • Data analytics solution: This software was hosted as a web service in the AWS cloud space provided by the customer. With a simple and intuitive user interface, this component utilized the acquired data intelligently and inferred helpful information from them.

Value Delivered

  • With real-time energy demand forecasting, the solution boosted overall efficiency and productivity by 15% – 25%.
  • It improved QoS with predictive modeling of grid performance.
  • Smart meter data analytics could be used to understand their energy usage pattern and reduce consumption.
  • The customer’s energy usage could be analyzed to detect theft or meter tampering.
  • Capable of customer churn analysis and retention methods along with analytics solutions, the software also provided the administrator with the provision to monitor remotely and carry out actions required to upkeep the power generation system. This reduced the need for field visits and offered provisions for multiple authorization levels in the system.
